We’ve all seen them. You go to Facebook, and you hit a page of your favourite band, t-shirt company or whatever it may be and you see a big graphic telling you to click the ‘like’ button before you can view their fan page, or a special offer of some sort.

This is actually a bit of a falsity, as you can clearly click the ‘wall’ on the left and still see the wall of the fan page. However, you cannot post to it, or comment on it, unless you ‘like’ the page. At least from what I have found in my research there is no way to completely hide everything until like is pressed.

That’s okay though, because we can just incentivise the initial graphic the users see, telling them that they’ll receive some sort of coupon or deal or something equally special if they click like. That’s the important part to get fans for our page.

Below we’re going to outline the steps, as with recent changes Facebook have enabled it can get quite confusing finding the right information without digging through multiple documents on the Facebook developer website.

For this tutorial we’re going to assume that you already have a fan page created for your business, band or whatever on Facebook. If you haven’t yet done this, you can go here to find out how to do that.

Here’s what you do to create the reveal tab on your fan page.

This process will probably take you 15-20 minutes – not including graphic design time (thumbnails, two like page graphics, etc).

1 First we’re going to create a couple files or use ours from step 2. These are what you’re going to use on your page new reveal tab. Note for the images max width of your FB Page is 520 Pixels, but we used 500 Pixels wide for our images to account for navbars if ever visible etc.

index.php
facebook.php from The Facebook PHP SDK
base_facebook.php from The Facebook PHP SDK
HasLikedGraphic.gif
NoLikeGraphic.gif

You can also download our package of files from here with default settings, you will want to pay attention to the APPID and APP KEY later on so you can modify this file with your values. Obviously you will eventually want to change the graphics as well.

Put the files in a directory name of your choice and upload to your server. For example if you use http://yourdomain.com as your main website, you would want to put the files in http://yourdomain.com/fblike/ or similar. This will also let you configure separate statistics on the facebook users if you have local statistics on your server and know how.

Test to make sure that they load, for example http://yourdomain.com/fblike/index.php . You should see the Not Liked image when you test it. Centered on your screen.

Now, Login to facebook under the account that owns the fan page.

Now, visit the Facebook Developers center (http://developers.facebook.com/). If you haven’t already registered for this, you will have to do so now. Don’t worry it’s easy!

Once you’re in the Facebook Developers interface, then you will want to click the ‘Apps’ item on the top of your screen.

Now you can create an application. Do so by clicking ‘Create New App’

A popup window will appear. Enter the application name you wish to use. For our purposes we used ‘Like Flewid Inc’. Accept the terms, and then click continue. Enter the captcha code and click submit.

Next you’ll be presented with your app page. This is where you do most of the editing.

First we should note down the ‘app key’ and ‘app secret’ for our application. Remember our files from step 1 and 2 – you’re going to want to open up the index.php now, and find the two lines for the APP ID and APP SECRET and change them to the one for your application. Save the changes to the server so the file is live.

Second we set both large and small icons to something more appropriate. The large icon is 75×75 and the small icon is 16x16px.

Now you’re going to want to setup the basic settings like the namespace and display name. They are all explained in the interface if you want more detail but it’s fairly straight forward.

Here’s what ours looks like after configuration.

Next we’re going to click the checkmark next to Page Tab below the basic information section.

This is where we’ll setup the information about our new Iframe page. It is important to note that the URL used here is important. If your site defaults to http://www.domainname.com your application must use the www., however if your site defaults to http://domainname.com your application must not use the www.

Also note, the secure page tab URL isnt’ required until October 1st, 2011. After that date it will be required for your app to function properly.

Advanced users might have an Edit url for the page, but we don’t need one for our purposes.

This is what ours looks like after configuration

Next click on Save Changes.

After saving your changes go to the left hand menu to the Advanced section.

Ensure your settings are like ours – entering your own url for the like page, and the contact information. The important part is the rest of the default settings. If you have an older fan page, some of your settings may be set differently than the new way of doing things.

Click Save Changes. Your application is now setup.

Now if you look over in the left hand menu of this screen you will see the Related links section, and in there is the ‘View App Profile Page‘. Yup, your application gets a page just like anyone else on Facebook. Go Click this link.

Now you’ll see the Application profile page. It will probably look similar to this. You are free to customize this or brand it appropriately. We won’t cover this now as it probably won’t be visited.

On this page, you’re going to want to scroll down in the sidebar and find the ‘Add to my Page’ link. Click on this link.

In the popup window that appears. Find the page you created for your business and select it.

It will ask you for a tab name. Enter it and click submit. Now you will have added the application to your fan page.

Visit your fan page, by logging in to Facebook as the account holder of the Fan Page and looking at the left hand side of the screen for the Fan Page listing, then click it.

Click on ‘Edit Page’ in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Here you will have to Customize a couple things. Go to the Apps item in the left hand menu.

Your app should be listed under Added Apps, or under ‘Apps you may like’ – if the latter, then click ‘Add App’ now and give it a Tab Name. We simply chose ‘Like Flewid’. Click Save Changes if required.

Now go to ‘Manage permissions’ on the left hand menu.

Make sure that the default landing tab is set to the new app you installed on your page. In our case, this is ‘Like Flewid‘. This makes sure that when people hit your fan page they will automatically see that tab instead of the wall.

Click Save Changes on this page.

Now your page, and your files should be setup, so it’s time for testing.

First “Unlike” your page, and then hit the refresh button just to be sure that you don’t like it anymore. If you’re not already on your new application tab/menu item, then click over to it now and make sure the image for people who haven’t liked your page is visible. Ours looks like this;

Now click like. And you should automatically see the ‘user has liked page’ image instead.;

You can also test by logging out of facebook completely and viewing your page as a complete visitor. Or, you can ask friends to visit your page with the added side benefit of them remaining fans of your page :)

We hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. We’re going to have some exciting new ones coming up too with information on how to extend your fan pages, and use the analytics that Facebook provides. Please leave us feedback below or let us know any questions you may have on this tutorial.

If you’ve been around the web for a while you’ve probably heard of, or at least stumbled upon a site using WordPress as its backend platform. WordPress was once just meant to be used as a simple blogging platform. Originally it pretty much just allowed users to quickly and easily setup a blog to begin publishing their stories on the web and have a voice. The features were pretty much limited to this type of functionality and didn’t allow for much customization without complicated programming or plug-in’s.

Fast forward a few years and WordPress has now released version 3.0 which allows for a vast amount of customizations and abilities that even some commercial content management systems don’t have support for, or cost expensive fees to enable. This makes WordPress a very robust option for any website, especially since it can be customized to match any brand or design already set in place.

Themes for WordPress are available and can be customized in a pinch, but we recommend going with a custom design to set your business or website apart to the visitor. Flewid can help with the design and development of your site and convert it into a standards compliant, valid XHTML/CSS structure. This ensures you will be visible to search engines, and they will be happy with the results their web-spiders return to them.

Along with the base WordPress installation there is also thousands of plug-ins available that add and extend the functionality of the basic program. The additional plug-ins allow for such things as extended search engine optimization per page or post, sitemap submission to the important search engines, and Twitter and Facebook tools that allow your site to efficiently link to all the social networks out there.

Using this type of tool for your business will allow it to be developed quickly and efficiently. This means that your site will be launched quicker, which also means your business will rapidly have more pages and posts available for the search engines to index. This means you will rank quicker, and nearer to the top than many other platforms.

With a strong community backing and a plethora of information available on the Internet about WordPress there is bound to be a solution to any problem thrown at it. That’s why Flewid has been using WordPress for over 5 years and doesn’t plan on moving to any other platform soon.

Why don’t you give us a call today to find out what WordPress and Flewid can do for your business and search marketing opportunities.

If you can rank on the first page of a search engine, instead of 10 pages in just think of what that will do for your sales or lead generation.

Using proper techniques and slow, organic link building strategies, social marketing, directory listing and more to rank your site with relevancy will help you get ahead of the competition in no time.

While there are a number of methods of going about this, not all of them are the most ethical or legal ways of doing it. Flewid uses strictly white hat techniques to bump your site up in the search engines for the term you want ranked.

Why don’t you contact us to find out what we can do for your business online?

In the race to victory in the online and offline marketing worlds, the winners are typically those that can gather the most prospects and leads, and successfully market to them. With the challenge being reaching prospective customers – how do you leverage the Internet to help do the work for you?

Enter Guide Site Builder – the new software package designed to quickly and easily generate an unlimited amount of “guide” websites – websites that host some sort of data like an e-book, recipe list, or other marketing collateral, that the user must input their contact information to receive.

Guide Site Builder takes the chore of creating fast, compelling websites with your branding and downloadable document and makes it a lightning fast, easily accomplished task that a user with any level of experience can handle.

Perhaps you’re a realtor that wants to collect user contact information when users download the weekly new market listings, or maybe you’re an author that wants to collect users’ contact information when they download the “sneak peek” chapter from your latest book. Whatever your marketing purpose, Guide Site Builder will allow you to generate a website where you can collect this user data at lightning speed.

Some of the key features of Guide Site Builder:

Extremely Easy to Install and Use – Gone are the days of needing a computer science degree to quickly create a website. Guide Site Builder is designed with the beginner in mind; with virtually no learning curve and very little understanding of graphic and web technology required, Guide Site Builder assists you with getting a guide site built quickly so you can focus on marketing to your new leads and prospects.

Industry-Standard CSV Databases – To ensure that you are able to easily use the prospect data that is collected via your guide site, Guide Site Builder places data in the comma-separated values format. You can then import this database into any spreadsheet program (Microsoft Excel, iWork Numbers, etc.), online email marketing provider (AWeber, ExactTarget, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, etc.) or mail merge software (Microsoft Word, etc.) to further market your products and services to your collected database.

A Variety of Templates – Guide Site Builder comes pre-installed with different templates in various colors to assist with customizing the look and feel of the websites created by Guide Site Builder. You can also make use of your own CSS styling to further customize your guide sites.

“Out-of-the-Box” SEO – Websites created by Guide Site Builder feature search engine optimization configurations built-in, saving additional time and ensuring that your guide sites get ranked in the main search engines.

Fully Standards-Compliant – Websites created by Guide Site Builder are fully compliant with XHTML Transitional and CSS standards.

International Language Support – Guide Site Builder features international language support, ensuring that the guide sites you create in any language will properly render in the web browsers of your target users.

For the past day or two we’ve been talking to a few internet copywriter friends about their business. It became apparent to us that they could use a little calculator to aide them in quoting clients and prospects. Of course, anyone can use the regular calculator in every OS to create these types of quotes but sometimes it’s nicer to have something generate one specific to the industry. So, with that said we now introduce you to The Content Calculator.

This little application will do a couple things for all you content creators out there. It lets you enter your clients name, email address, company name and country, then enter a customizable amount of content options you’re providing to them. The whole time you’re creating a quote, the application will update the individual prices and total price in real time so you can give accurate quotes while talking to that prospective client on msn or over the telephone.

But wait, there’s more to this application. It will also spit out the quoted information to a text file so you can email it to the client, or save it for your records. Wow!

I bet you think we’d charge you for this. Nope, instead we’re releasing it as donation-ware. If you like it, send us a couple bucks. That’s it, no sales pressure, no nothing, just giving back to the community and hoping others can use this to generate a few bucks. Karma’s a good thing right?

So, down to the technical specifications of the application and what you’ll need to run it successfully. We’re providing you with a ready to run executable (spyware, adware free) for Windows systems with .NET 2.0 capability (XP, Vista, 2K, 2K3, Etc). If you are running MAC or Linux you can download the source files we’ll link to later and try and compile it with Mono. It should work just fine since it’s developed with .NET 2.0 in mind.

Quick Requirements List:

While we love the guys over at Yieldbuild, and we love the idea behind their software we’re just not sure all the bugs or worked out, or it’s completely possible that the site we’re trying it has far too low traffic to make a difference. We had decided to run a test with YieldBuild for 30 days vs regular adsense. Here’s what we came out with:

Nov 15 – Dec 15 Adsense Only

$82.61

Dec 16 – Jan 16 YieldBuild + Adsense

$44.57

So, as you can see, the income did reduce by about half. However, with Yieldbuild while we’re seeing a much lower click volume, they are worth much more (for example, one click was $6.85). I’m sure if we had a lot more visitors that Yieldbuild would gain much better results on the whole, but because we’re not seeing huge numbers their algo isn’t positive what is best for us, and where to display it.

For now we’re gonna leave it off, and work on getting more uniques before turning it back on again.
